Yes, REM occurs within the first 90 minutes in normal sleep. No, the first night's sleep in the sleep lab is not normal sleep. It is well known among sleep labs that many patients will sleep less total time, with more arousals, and quite possibly not have any REM in the first sleep cycle when in the lab. The is known as the "first night effect" and occurs anytime, anywhere when one sleeps in a different situation than you are used to in recent days. This could be at the sleep lab, at a relative's house, or anywhere else.
Even if you did have your usual REM sleep in the first sleep cycle, that REM sleep usually only lasts a couple of minutes. It is not until later in the night that significant REM occurs, usually in the last 2-3 sleep cycles, in the last 2-4 hours of the night.
