Why don't you try wearing the mask and using the machine in the evening, while watching television or reading. What seems so intimidating in the darkened bedroom in the middle of the night may seem more benign in the lighted living room with other distractions happening around you. Once you've had time to adjust to breathing air pressurized at 9cm, you'll probably find that you don't even notice it. Also, if you feel claustrophic wearing the mask, maybe one of the nasal pillow arrangements would be less disconcerting. In a sense, you have to make friends with the CPAP machine. It's not the enemy.
