schenners sounds like he could be my brother! I, too, have a history of chronic congestion which is alergy based but here in the high desert, that means 11 and 1/2 months of the year. I tried everything; Flonase, nasal strips, nasal spray, otc degongestants and they all helped but I was never 100%. Virtually, the minute I used a heated humidifier all of my congestion problems simply disappeared. I stopped ALL the other aids, cold turkey. It also had an effect on daytime congestion but I took one more step to deal with that and that is a neti pot which is simply a form of nasal irrigation which flushes out allergens which accumulate in the nasal passages. Now I don't have allergiy symptoms ANY of the time for the first time in 55 years!!
The second point also repeats schenners' advice. Get a nasalaire!!!. I struggled with a mask for 1 month and never got it to work for more than 4 hours a night despite being very motivated. Then the lab tech at my titration session told me he used this device and it was simply like night and day compared to the mask. I think there is a conspiracy in the industry to avoid talking about the NA, otherwise why is it that few Drs START with the NA? Only when people can't get the mask to work does the NA come out of the closet.
You may find that mouth breathing becomes a thing of the past once you can breathe thru your nose and aren't bummed out by the d**n mask.
Keep trying--its worth it!!
