Air passing over the water will cool it and lower the amount of humidity. Keeping the water warmer allows the air to pick up more moisture. Extremely dry, cold air is very irritating to the nasal passages.
Trust us on this -- heated works!
Also try an over-the-counter saline spray such as Ayr.
