I had all the same problems. Besides making sure the bottom metal part is firmly attached to the plastic chamber, load the unit WITHOUT water in it. After it is properly seated and the valve from the CPAP properly inserted, you are ready to add the water. I leave a plastic funnel next to my machine and simply take the hose of the top of the humidifier and add the proper amount of water. I only take the humidifier plastic chamber off of the machine once a week to clean it. Its funny how all of us develop short cuts and our own solutions to problems we face everyday.
