Change in teeth sleeping closemouth

Posted by Mlou52 on May 27, 2003 at 21:51:03:

I had a peculiar experience. I had been using a custom mouth applicance because of TMJ pain. When I started on the CPAP, I didn't use it because I felt that one major technological challenge at a time was sufficient.

In terms of the mouth breathing, I was lucky. I use an Adam's circuit with nasal pillows (which works pretty well for me). I found that the uncomfortable feeling I got from the air move through my nose and out my mouth whenever I opened my mouth was enough to train me to keep my mouth shut.

A couple of weeks ago, however, I strated develping TMJ pain again following root canal surgery, and my dentist suggested I go back to the mouth appliance. To my amazement, it doesn't fit anymore. Apparently the pressure of my lips pushing back on my front teeth now that I am sleeping with my mouth closed have moved them more into line. (not a lot - no alternative to braces - lol)

Anyone else had this experience?
