I check the hose by simply (disconnecting it from the machine at both ends and) holding my hand over one end and blowing through it. If there are leaks you should feel it. I suppose if you wanted to, if that method isn't as foolproof as you'd like, you could put the end you're holding your hand over into water, check as much of it under water as you can, then switch ends and hold the other part under water.
