Posted by Zombie on August 01, 2003 at 02:27:09:Hi all,
I've been lurking here for a while now and am glad a place like this exists! I finally came to accept that I probably have OSA about two years ago and am now doing something about it (I finally have health insurance again). I think I've had OSA for more like 4-5 years, but just really started feeling the effects more recently.
I have a sleep study scheduled for next week and would like to hear any suggestions on what questions I should ask the doctor. I have read that it's good to ask for the doc to specifically prescribe a heated humidifier for insurance reasons. Is there anything else? Can I ask him to prescribe an auto-pap machine, rather than just a CPAP? From more reading here I have gathered that this is the way to go, since it can do auto or normal cpap (please educate me if I'm wrong here). Also, if I am diagnosed with OSA, how long before I can expect to start treatment with a CPAP at home?
While I'm not crazy about the prospect of using a CPAP, I know it's better than feeling like a Zombie all the time. I've pretty much made up my mind that, for me, current surgical alternatives are out of the question. Although, I still have my tonsils and wouldn't be opposed to having those removed (my primary care physician said they were quite large). Anything beyond that doesn't strike me as a good idea. Despite my reservations in this area, I will ask the doctor questions about surgical alternatives anyway - any suggestions in regard to this would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Matt
