I suggest you become your own expert on apnea and the fatal consequence for inadequate treatment. Some doctors are not competent, some don't care. Many doctors, even those who do care, are not well versed on apnea. If you need to have a sleep study, have your doctor go to bat for you. If necessary give the dr. the ammunition about apnea to fight the insurance company. If a doctor says that something is life threatening (and untreated apnea is) the insurance company will probably back down. Medicare will ok a mask every 6 months, so you can use that as a reference for your insurance. Good luck.
