My experience with the Spirit is that it works best for me if it has the largest pressure window possible. I prefer a minimum pressure of 8 or higher only because if it is set at 4, I feel kinda suffocated when I first start it up. The only problems I have had with leaving the maximum pressure set at 20 is if I have a mask leak. I am using a Resmed full face mask. If I get a leak, the machine ramps up the pressure in response. Which makes the leak worse...which raises the pressure...which makes the leak worse...until I wake up with the machine maxed out, the mask howling, and me wanting to throw the darn thing across the room. Getting old ain't much fun is it?
