Bad Breath, help

Posted by mikey on August 19, 2003 at 08:20:53:

I've had sleep apnea for years and am still trying to use CPAP on a nightly basis. Am doing another sleep study tonight to see if the pressure is still accurate after 2 surgeries. Anyway, my question has to do w/ bad breath. I've felt like I've had bad breath as long as I can remember. I've asked 2 allergists (have allergys), 3 dentists and an ENT about this and they all say the same thing:

1. Don't drink coffee or cola (which I don't)
2. Try nasal sprays (which I've done)
3. Take something for acid reflux (which I've done)
4. Don't use mouthwash (for the most part I don't, but sometimes I just have to)
5. Eat sugerless gum/candy (which I do)
6. Drink a lot of water (I probably drink 2-3X the recommended amount)
7. Scrape tongue (which I do) --- I also brush my teeth about 6X/day and floss 2X/day.

None of the above have worked. In addition, I religously stay away from garlic, onions and most peppers. Not sure how appropriate this post is for this board, but no one else has been able to help. I'm sure part of the problem is that I'm a mouth breather, but I haven't been able to cure that. I've tried a chin strap, but that didn't help... I guess I could always just tape my mouth shut and see if that helps.

Regarding the sleep study tonight, one is for retitration (at least that's what I think they call it when they check the pressure) and the other one is to test a full face mask.

That's about it, if anyone has suggestions, I would much appreciate it. The last dentist told me to contact the oral pathology dept at the local university... I guess I could try that, but I hate being a "test" patient.
