When my hose became disconnected while my mouth was taped, I breathed through my nose for some time, then realized somehow that something was wrong and woke up. I suspect if power failed or CPAP failed the exhaust hole would work for a while for me (us) to get air, then we would start waking up. by the way when I tape my mouth, I have to NOT make a fold-over easy removal tab; I kept waking up having taken the tape off!
