I'm a sleep tech with 19 years experience - those numbers you mention for sleep study results are entirely normal and no cause to treat anything. there is nothing to treat based on those numbers. That 85% is abnormal, but I can think of several things that could be related, only one or two needing any treatment. You should listen to your doc on this one. She/he is right to not try to treat the 10 events.
The stress thing snowballing over the years is known as "psychophysiological insomnia."
In layman's terms - a short term typical type of insomnia that should go away by itself without any treatment did not go away, and now your body and psyche have "learned" poor sleep habits which need to be "unlearned."
A medication can be a part of the "unlearning" process, but it should be only one part of several. Make sure to followup on all the parts of treatment your doctor recommended. Just the Remeron by itself will most likely not do the job.
