Is the Doctor Right???

Posted by Yawner on September 04, 2003 at 10:19:48:

Hey Folks!

I've been waking up lately, not breathing, with my CPAP on and working. Went to doctor thinking I could maybe just get an AutoPap machine to correct the pressure as needed...no need for another $2000 night at the sleep clinic. Wrong! I've been on CPAP for about 9 months now, and doing fine until the last month or so.

The Doc (Pulmanologist) says that we need to look at the situation again in the clinic and see for sure how much apnea is from blockage and how much is Central Apnea. Can't he tell that from the original TWO nights I spent in the clinic 9 months ago? He tells me that usually a patient with both central apnea and a blockage in the throat can be treated with a CPAP. He says that an Auto-Pap would NOT fix the problem if I had more Central apnea, BUT, that a Bi-Pap WOULD fix it. Huh?! I don't understand how a Bi-Pap would work at a set pressure for in and out, if an AutoPap would not work.

Does this all make sense to you?? I'm new enough to this that I have to trust the Doc, but, I don't see the logic here. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Yawner
