apnea and meds

Posted by Lazy Suzan on September 04, 2003 at 12:27:17:

Hello all-- I am still struggling with a "sleep disturbance" and believe it is some type of apnea. I am so freaked out about the possibility of not breathing at night that I am having to take sleep meds just to relax enough to go to sleep. I realize that the sleep meds that I take may be contributing to my breathing problem, but if I don't take them I only get about 3 hours of sleep per night. I have another evaluation with a different sleep specialist next week and hope that I can get some relief. The sleep specialist I went to last year did not diagnose me with apnea, but did say that I had a very low soft palate and a crowded oropharynx. I have tried biofeedback to relax, but as soon as I quit breathing I jerk awake, the adrenaline is flowing, the heart starts racing and I'm back in the vicious cycle again. Do most people with OSA have this reaction while they are trying to sleep? Does anyone out there have any suggestions or similar experiences?
