Sleepy,

The chin-strap shouldn't be so tight that it prevents you from opening your mouth while awake. It just needs to be tight enough so your jaw doesn't hang down at night. You may be overshooting during adjustment.

If the mask isn't fitting well, get another one. This is the kind of issue even a simple-minded DME dealer should be able to handle.
