Sleep Apnea and cardiomyopathy?

Posted by Chrissy on October 14, 2003 at 16:21:05:

I am very interested in the connection between sleep apnea and cardiomyopathy or heart disease. I have what is called idiopathic, which means they don't know what caused it. I have been a snorer for years, so the connection is getting very big in my mind at the moment. Also not one of my doctors in the past 2 1/2 years of having cardiomyopathy has even mentioned sleep apnea to me. I changed doctors (GP) last week and this was the first thing this new doctor asked me. My symptoms are so classical sleep apnea, that I have seen from this board and site, that I can't believe that I have never even been tested. A lot of the symptoms could be attributed to my heart, but also to sleep apnea. I have deteriorated with my heart and it is looking like I am facing major intervention soon, but this may be a solution.

I am in Australia. I know I am probably jumping the gun, but if I am diagnosed with sleep apnea, what is the cost of the machine etc. I don't have private health insurance but I am on a part disability pension because of my cardiomyopathy. I did notice that one of the members of the forum used the prefix Oz, so hope that they can help me. The more that I think about the connection between the heartand sleep apnea the more I want to get this testing done, and soon. I know that I have asked a lot of questions, but I feel this may be the answer to prayers, and may take pressure of my poor heart muscle. I am 49 and have a 14 year old daughter, so need to be around a lot longer. Thanks, Christine
