Suggest you try a little experiment. Hose up with the mask and all, only do not turn on your machine.

If you lay down and relax you will find you can breathe due to the vents in your mask. It is not particullary comfortable, that is why people wake up when the power goes off. When you are asleep your beathing will be much more relaxed and slower than during your little experiment. I have awakened and not immediately realized the machine was off, but that everything was unsually dark - oh the machine is off!

If people suffocated when the power went off we would be dropping like flies.
