Getting Used to CPAP & Ambien

Posted by boltnut55 on October 16, 2003 at 15:58:42:

Last August I got my CPAP, pressure 9. For the first six months, I only could use it for about 3 hours a night before the mask would be flung away, subconsciously usually because I don't ever remember doing it! In March 2003, I got a better mask - one that doesn't leak, but I could only use it for about 1 hour a night and then flung away. Several months later, I couldn't even fall asleep with the mask on, but when I take it off, I'd fall asleep immediately. I am used to the air blowing in my nose, I like this mask, I have the humidifier on (the non-passover one), I'm used to the noise. I just can't fall asleep. Every time I'm close to falling asleep, I'd wake up, sort of like falling asleep in the car and your head bobs.

My doctor prescribed 10 mg. Ambien for me yesterday. I used it last night and managed to sleep for 2 hours w/the mask on. Do you think this is the way to go? I've heard that I should either alternate days or go three days w/it and three days w/o just to make sure I'm not "addicted." I also feel a little groggy and w/a headache today. Is that from the medication? I don't want to feel this way everytime I use it! My dr. hopes that using the Ambien will condition me to sleep better w/the mask on and eventually not need it.

Any comments? Any advice? It's been more than one year w/CPAP, and I just don't feel successful on it... I know I need to try harder, but hope there are things that will help me to try harder. As always, THANKS!
