More on OSA and reflux

The citation below is for my write-up on apnea and reflux.

Recently there has been some publicity that treating reflux treats apnea.

Here is my biased opinion as to what is happening.

Apneas cause swelling in the airway, and apneas cause reflux as described in my paper. The reflux irritates the tissues including some in the airway. This additional swelling makes OSA worse. However, if you treat for reflux you will lose the incremental apnea caused by the reflux while retaining the original apnea.

At least that is the way I think that it works, but then I am not a doctor so what do I know?

Herr J. A possible pathologic link between chronic cough and sleep apnea syndrome through gastroesophageal reflux disease in older
people. Chest. 2001 Sep;120(3):1036-7. [full text]
