It sounds like this friend was diagnosed while a patient in hospital. The doctor that diagnosed this – who presumably works at that hospital – should see to it that they know what to do. The manufacturers could also be more aggressive.

There have also been some postings in the past regarding the hospitalization of veteran CPAP patients. If the hospitalization is planned, prearrangements can be made. One thing that might help is to paste a sign on the CPAP machine, warning of dire consequences if CPAP is not used.
