a tap water filter will NOT filter out dissolved minerals, which is good for drinking but bad for humidifiers, and COULD result in mineral buildup or other reactions with materials in the heated humidifier. I was shown an example of a messed up "filtered water" humidifier when I picked up mine. Although I suspect it was boiled dry a few times to get THAT bad.
