What's the deal?

Posted by Sleep Seeker on February 24, 2004 at 04:22:38:

Like many people, making my PAP treatment effective has been an adventure (struggle?). For me, getting the diagnosis was just the beginning of a frustrating journey. I've had two sleep studies, many different masks and I'm on my third machine. I've been working on it for nearly two years now. I currently have a Puritan Bennett GoodKnight 420E (with software), Resmed Humidaire Heat Humidifier, and a Resmed Mirage Full Face Mask Series II.

I never felt my treatment made any significant difference until I received my GoodKnight 420E in late November. Thankfully, after I received it, I began having some good days. For a time after I got it, there would be days that I felt rested, alert, and even cheerful. I found it easy to concentrate on those days.

Now I'm finding that I having difficulty sleeping enough. I go to bed normally at around 10:00 PM but find myself waking up at 4:00 or 5:00 AM. It seems that I just can't stay asleep long enough to pay off my sleep debt which I believe should be considerable. I'm adding to the debt. Its not like I'm not tired. I'm exhausted most of the time. I thought I had a Circadian rythm problem so I bought a light box and use it faithfully but that doesn't seem to be helping.

Has anyone else experienced what I'm going through? I thought I'd finally turned the corner and thought my treatment was finally going to be effective and now I can't stay asleep. Is this some kind of adjustment period to effective treatment? I know everyone probably reacts differently but this seems like a cruel joke. Any insight you could give would be appreciated.
