The lower oxygen level may exacerbate the symptoms by increasing the oxygen shortfall. A marginal shortfall can be become a severe shortfall. Also, the deeper breathing you describe may cause the airway to be more prone to collapse. It's like sucking harder on a wet paper staw! (Thanks to Dr. Denton for that description).
