I know that before I was diagnosed and under treatment for apnea, that every time I woke up from a nightmare I was invariably on my back.
I think the inability to breathe was translating into the nightmares whenever I was on my back. I'd wake up with my heart pounding, sometime sweating buckets...
It could be a side effect of the apnea making you wake up scared with the olde Fight or Flight response. Fear causes your body to release adrenaline.
It wouldn't hurt to let your doctor know either way.
I hope that your problem goes away with treatment!
