Yes, you should keep the reservoir, hoses, and mask dry. If you use distilled water, they say nothing can grow, but I'm not convinced. I do this by running the unit dry for a few minutes in the morning. It's almost five years old, and this has not damaged the unit, even though the humidifier is built-in and cannot be turned off completely (I don't even turn it down during drying).

IF you're concerned about wating water, only fill it up half way (since that's how much seems to evaporate in a night).
