Under no circumstances should you check it in. It is exempt from any baggage limit. It is expensive, delicate, hard to replace, and the consequneces of it's being lost for a night or two are just horrendous.

Make sure that it can run on the electricity in the country(ies) that you're visiting. Also, make sure that you can get the plug in the socket (different countires have different shape sockets).
