Because of circadian rhythms it is very hard for anybody to adjust to rotating shifts or the night shift. At most you can shift your rhythm about 1-1.5 hours per 24 hour period. This means that it can take up to 2 weeks to fully change your rhythm. And this is if you maintain the same hours on your days/nights off.
Most studies show that people on the night shift will get 60-90 minutes less sleep than "normals" (and normals get about 60-90 minutes less sleep than they actually need).
People with sleep disorders will have a much harder time adapting to shift work than normals.
There are steps to take to help yourself if you are doing shift work, if your interested let me know.
