camping

First, I really appreciate reading the forum postings. I only know one other person with sleep apnea, so it is really helpful to read your experiences and ideas and know that there are others out there finding their way through this condition.

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea last winter, after many, many years of poor sleep and several years of disabling daytime sleepiness and confusion. I am really grateful that my family doctor finally took this seriously and sent me to the sleep center. I was really surprised about the diagnosis, since I had always assumed it was just stress-related insomnia (people in my family have slept poorly for several generations.)While CPAP hasn't been a "perfect" solution so far (as in I still wake up at least once most nights), I am really awake, energetic, pretty happy, and most of all, thinking clearly, during the day most days. So there's a lot to be happy about.

But even in these few months, there are lots of lifestyle adjustments that I am finding challenging, and here is my question: Every summer my family goes tent camping or backpacking for our vacation. This is what we love to do, and it's also how we can afford to take vacation. Has any of you figured out a way to camp in a tent and still use CPAP? I can't think of any safe and workable way to do this. Does any of you have experience with not using the machine while camping, and how has this turned out? Have you discovered any alternative ways of managing apnea that are compatible with camping? I would really hate to have to give up an activity that is so delightful to me and that is such an integral part of my family's life.

Right now my plan is just to go camping for a few days and figure I can manage that long even if I sleep badly. But I'd love any other ideas anyone might have. I only know one other person in my "real life" who has sleep apnea -- she has been very supportive throughout this experience and answered lots of questions, but she hasn't camped in the last 10 years! Thank you very much for any ideas. Habiba
