Posted by dopey on July 29, 2004 at 08:46:39:This is a long one... In November of 2001 I had a series of sinus infections and had to take 3 courses of antibiotics to clear it up. During the third course (Levaquin), I started feeling really strange. As if I was always hungover. No headache just very spaced out, foggy and kind of disconnected with the world. It really affected my life, particularly work. I started searching the internet for answers. I kept coming back to apnea and/or depression as possible culprits. When I saw my PCP he immediately put me on Celexa for depression and sent me to sleep specialist. It took me 2 months to get the sleep study and in the meantime I took the Celexa but it had no effect on my stuporous brain, only some wierd feeling side effects. Bear in mind, I have never considered myself depressed in the classic sense. I am not sad, feeling worthless, guilty or blue, just dense with the fog. Since the anti-depressants did not improve my alertness, I stopped taking them. At that time I had my sleep study. I was diagnosed with an RDI of 64 and put on CPAP. However, my titration study was a flop, in my opinion. I was fitted with a nasal mask and told to go to sleep. I hadn't been able to breathe through my nose in decades! Deviated septum, since repaired. When I saw the doc about my study he commented to me that he didn't think I would stick with CPAP but put me into a Virtuoso LX auto set from 7-13. I was actually excited to have a diagnosis! Maybe I could get bcak to my old self! I used it every night, all night and still do. However, I still felt the grogginess, just not as severe as before. It did get better, just not altogether good. Bear in mind, the sleepiness test they give you has never meant anything to me. I would NEVER fall asleep driving, watching a movie or whatever. I fall asleep in bed and only in bed. So when I take the sleepiness test and the doc downloads my CPAP info, he thinks everything is great. I use it every night and don't fall asleep at the wheel! You're cured!!! Wrong. I have never really felt "sleepy" or severely fatigued. Just a little tired and ALOT stupid.I have had several pressure changes in the 2 years since the diagnosis (first 7-13 auto, then staight CPAP at 7, 9, 11, and 14) and I have never felt any difference at any pressure. I don't seem to have any other sleep related disorders and I've tried darn near every pressure their is. I have also tried Provigil, just wired me a little, still dense. What could be the deal?
