Almost a CPAP user with questions

Posted by pattycake on July 30, 2004 at 15:01:17:

I have recently been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. I have not received my CPAP machine yet. Interestingly, I had UP3 surgery while having my t&a's removed. I was 5 at the time. I snored REALLY loud. My mom always thought that my tonsils were closing off my airway. I had my tonsils removed again at 11, yes they can grow back.

Now I am in my late 30's and have been having headaches upon waking up. They disappear as my day progresses. I told my doc about my sister and my father's sleep apnea. He took one look at my nose and throat and sent my to the sleep lab. That was fun...I have a very small nose; so, they couldn't get the nose appliance to stay in. They woke me up 3-4 times. They told me I needed a bigger nose. LOL

When I went back to use the CPAP machine I couldn't go to sleep and I developed a VERY sore throat. I had to take medication at 3 am and finally fell alsleep after 30 minutes. I slept until 6:30 am, but woke up with my throat hurting severly. I was told by the sleep lab that the machine I will be getting has a humidifier as part of the machine. I am wondering if this will help? Also, Do I need to talk to my Pulmonologist to see if he will refer me to an ENT regarding my deviated septum. How can the CPAP machine be successful if I favor breathing through my mouth, because of my nose?

The sleep lab said I may have to come back another night since I couldn't sleep. JOY. I certainly hope not. It's so hard to sleep with all that stuff hooked to you. On the other hand I don't think I have ever had a good night's rest and I will certainly do whatever I can to have one.
