Bicycle Touring and Apnea

Posted by Bicycling Jim on September 07, 2004 at 14:46:10:

Several years ago I was diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea. I've been on CPAP ever since. It has worked wonders for my energy level and attitude. Since I enjoy many outdoor activities including bicycle touring and backpacking, I sought ways to continue these activities. That led me to an oral appliance that moves the lower jaw forward. It does not get me back to normal, but reduces the apneas some if I sleep on my side or stomach. I don't use it unless I'm traveling for an extended period.

This summer I completed a self-contained cross-country bicycle tour from Yorktown, Virginia to Seattle, Washington. I had major concerns about going without CPAP for 3 months. But the great news is that I was able to function relatively well with the oral appliance. The trip was an incredible experience. I'm back on CPAP now that I'm home. I post this to offer encouragement to some folks who may be candidates for this type of temporary help, particularly folks who might not attempt the activity otherwise. Clearly the oral appliance is not for everyone, but it got me across America on a bicycle. It might work for you, too.

Cheers!
