It is not a "cure" just as taking insulin does not cure a diabetic. CPAP relieves the symptoms of apnea; insulin relieves the symptoms of diabetes. In both cases, the patient can stop and restart treatment at any time, thereby putting himself at great risk.
If I have pneumonia and the doctor gives me antibiotics, the pneumonia is cured, gone, and I don't have to continue taking antibiotics the rest of my life.
