Just Beginning

Posted by Mindful on September 09, 2004 at 17:28:30:

For many years people told me that I was a terrific snorer, and some said they became concerned when I stopped breathing while asleep.

I also have periods of anxiety and depression that get worse when I am under stress. I have sought professional help and have self medicated. Despite many different drugs and therapies, I’ve never known exactly what gets me better.

I didn’t put the two, the night breathing difficulty and the psychological issues, together, until recently. Recently I told my ENT about the breathing problems. I had a sleep study done, which confirmed the apnea.

I now realize that I must have lived on the edge of exhaustion for a long time. When demands become greater than my resources, I become anxious and subsequently, if there is no resolution, depressed.

Last week I returned to the sleep lab to get fitted for a mask. Despite all the wires and unfamiliar surroundings, I slept better, more peacefully, than any time I can remember. In a couple of weeks I’ll get my mask and, hopefully, get relief and begin a healthier time.

Questions:

What is the relationship between apnea, anxiety and depression?
Can the effects of apnea mimic ADD?
What are the consequences of suddenly getting REM sleep for the first time in years?
And the big one: Will the mask be the transformation I’m looking for?

Thanks in advance.
