I did not say that whole would cheaper than term; just that it wouldn’t be much more. The reason is the following:

Term Life insurance is – ordinarily – much cheaper than whole life insurance. The reason is that if you outlive you term policy, they pay nothing. With whole life, on the other hand, you will die eventually, so it is certain that they will have to pay at some point.

Here we’re considering a term policy is written based on an actuarial assumption that death during the term of the policy is extremely likely. Conversely, they’re assuming that it’s very unlikely that you’ll live past the term of the policy. To recap, these assumptions give you a lot less of a chance of outliving a term policy, thus wiping out most of the cost differential.
