The original breeze port was very noisy. It was redesigned and is now totally noiseless. It is highly unlikely you have one of the original ones, but the difference is one mold mark instead of 2 in the new one. This is 2 "bumps" on the soft part. Maybe you could take the soft part out completely and see if there is some type of restriction. If not, contact the company.

The tenderness should go away in time. Lubricate with petroleum jelly- vaseline. Antibiotic ointments such a neosporin should be avoided because prolonged exposure may cause allergy to the antibiotic. This is likely the cause of irritation that many report.
Not sure why a narrower plenum would help.
