hello, i am very happy to have found this forum. i want to focus on curbing this issue of sleep apnea right now. my wife has complained of very heavy snoring and the characteristic 'choking awake' symptom since we first got together, 25 yrs ago. i am a 45 yr old male, and have suffered with this for a very long time. the last really good sleep i had was over 20 yrs ago, and it is time i got this under control.

i am suffering with memory loss, poor mental function, constant tiredness and a lot of the other symptoms many here have described. lately i have had chest pains in the left side of my chest which has made me wake up and take serious notice. i visited my dr today and got a clean bill of health to resume excercise and will right away.

i am a smoker (40 + per day) and am heavily addicted to caffeine (5- 20 cups per day). doing research i have found that both of these greatly accentuate my problem of poor sleep. i am resuming a workout regimen to lose about 15 extra pounds i have on, and will give up the caffeine (first) in the next month and the tobacco as soon as i can- by the end of the year is my goal. i am also quitting the odd drink or 2 i have once or twice a week.

my question is, what other things can i do to alleviate my sypmtoms as much as possible, before i visit a sleep clinic? i don't want to waste anybody's time by going with all of the obvious things not done first.

also, people on this forum have advised taping a sleep session. afaik, the longest media i can get is to record my sleep is with a video camera plugged into my vcr (6 hours at extended play) does anyone know of a way to tape a whole 8 hour sleep session?

i can sleep for 10 hours or more and wake feeling worse than when i went to sleep. obviously i am not experiencing much 3 or 4th level sleep, but i do remember some dreaming on occasion.

tia, r.h.
