General opinion in the medical literature is that CPAP improves GERD problems.
The reason for this is that if your rib cage is expanding to breath against an airway that has collapsed it creates a large negative pressure within your upper body. Coupled with lying down this creates a suction effect that can bring up stomach contents i.e. GERD. The negative pressure is much much larger than the positive pressure that CPAP provides in the upper airway. Overcoming the airway blockage with CPAP normalises the pressure caused by breathing. Thus CPAP should not make GERD worse it should and does make it better.
