My sleep disruptions started immediately after a bout of Epstein-Barr, which I theorized did something to my immune system and promoted a state of hyper-vigilance and restlessness.

I was also diagnosed with mild apnea, but CPAP doesn't make much difference.

Do you toss and turn a lot? Do you find it difficult to get comfortable before bed? Do you wake up in odd positions?

The effect of the anti-histamine may indicate an allergic component to your problem. See an allergist and have some skin testing done.

Wish I could me of more help, but I'm in the same boat and still searching for solutions myself. Aside from the mild apnea, "something" continually knocks me out of a deep sleep. Finding what that "something" is has been a years-long mission.
