You're story is only the half of it, if the DME will stock or order the item you need they will charge your insurance carrier three times what you could purchase the same item for online then the DME tells you the insurance company has "contracted rates" and pay's based on those rates yet after the adjustment you wind up paying the DME there price less any insurance payment plus your deductable if you have not meet it. No wonder were all paying thru the nose for monthly health insurance and the DME still screws us. In a lot of cases you're better off buying the item on line, your out of pocket expense will be about the same as using insurance and you are not making the fat cat DME fatter, unless you own stock in a DME.
