I know - those aren't fun, are they? Each person is different, but I found it helpful to keep reminding myself *I* was the one in control of my breathing - not the machine. Remove the mask when you need to. Then try it again for a while, if you can. If you can't, tell yourself that's ok, and that you'll give it another go when you're ready.
This puts you in control of the situation. For me, that is an important consideration. Without that, I wouldn't have been able to do APAP.
Eventually it will get easier.
Allow yourself all the time you need to come to terms with the machine. It's there to help you sleep better and feel better. It's an ally, not an enemy. (That was a MAJOR step for me.)
I was helped by working on desensitization with a therapist. That might be worth a go. I still have moments of panic, but they're passing more quickly now.
Remain gentle on yourself and remember - the machine works for YOU, not the other way around.
Do either call your doctor or the sleep techs, who tend to be more understanding and helpful.
This unease will eventually pass. Until then, know you're not alone. There's an army of us out there, geared up for sleep right when you are. (Kind of a funny mental image, isn't it?) :-)
