I have no idea what a 10% drop in saturated O2 will do to my brain, and it seems that you don't either, or you would have told me. Indeed, several sleep specialists have said that they do not know what are the effects of lower O2 levels.

I am very sorry for you (and if my apnea leads me down the same path described in your penultimate paragraph, I will probably be very sorry for myself) but if you insist on assuming that I am (or will be) just like you, I'll persist in finding what you write unhelpful (and I imagine that I am not the only one). It seems to me an open question as to whether it is "better" to be asymptomatic (see SGS's informative response, which points out that asymptomatic apneics may be harder to treat, while being just as vulnerable to the long term effects) but it seems not at all an open question whether some people with apnea are, and remain, asymptomatic.
