This does sound unusual for such a "severe" case. I think that you're correct in prediciting long-term consequneces if you don't comply with treatment. My suggestion is that you comply with treatment, and never find out for sure! Your wife's obervations are vindicated by the test results.

You are very fortunate to have a wife sho cares so much! If you won't do it for yourself, do it for her!!!
