Since you've experienced rain-out problems, it does appear that your humidifier is functioning. Just to make sure, see the reservoir is warm to the touch. Also, the water level should be considerably lower in the morning than it was at night.
Normally, I advise everybody to place the humidifier lower than your head, especially those who complain of rainout. However, you need to cognizant of the face that if you put the CPAP in the coldest spot in the room, you’ll pull in the colder air. If your humidifier is a separate one (I.E. not integrated into the CPAP), you can place the CPAP on a night table, and the humidifier on the floor. You may need longer hoses to do this, but you should be able to get longer hoses.
BTW, the air should not be noticeably warm, and certainly not hot. It should just feel a little less cold. Unless the humidifier is malfunctioning, it can never be hot enough to burn or scald you.
