The sleep tech told me that I am probably not quite overweight enough to account for it, but that it would help. Even when I was very fit, I snored like a bear (literally - I have a funny camping story about a couple of guys afraid to leave their tent) sometimes. I might not have had apnea, but I suspect I did, just not as bad. There are waif like apnea patients, but most of us are carrying around some baggage. I would still pursue CPAP as a course of treatment first, lose weight and ask for titration testing with an auto CPAP for a few nights (unless you can convince them to give you an auto as your primary machine) to see how much it is helping.
