Non Sleep Apnea Surgery

Posted by radioman on March 02, 2005 at 10:42:22:

I have sleep apnea (6 years as diagnosed via sleep lab) and have managed to live without a CPAP.

After my second attack of diverticulitis, I am told that I should have a bowel resection to get rid of the colon that has the problem area. Not too happy about this, however, given the alternative of a colostomy, I'll take the surgery.

While I did have a general anesthetic for a melanoma tumor removal from my back in 2003, I was fine and "fought" with the gang in the recovery room to be returned to my room as opposed to staying there overnight for observation. I vowed never to have surgery again especially one as delicate as this one!

Has anyone had surgery recently and how were you handled when you came out of the anesthetic?

My understanding is that we sufferers of OSA are highest at risk when the surgery is complete and we're headed into recovery.

Please help my anxiety!

Thanks
radioman
