Posted by washington state debbie on April 20, 2005 at 18:45:57:It has been 4 years since I have posted on this message board. I thought I would post to share my adventures.
I went for a sleep test because I couldn't drive to or from work without being drowsy. I would fall asleep at work if I wasn't up and moving. They requested I see a doctor and find out what the problem was. I would try and sleep at least 10 hrs a night and still would wake up feeling I wasn't getting any rest.
The sleep test showed I was having 55 hyponeas an hour , and my oxygen level was 79. Two weeks later I finally got my res med machine with a setting of 15, and a mirage nasal mask. A week later I requested a humidifier.
I started noticing an improvement in my sleep right away. I was so tired before that any sleep was a big improvement.
When I finally caught up on my sleep debt is when I noticed the little irritations that would wake me up, mask leaks, rainouts, hose falling off. I would still catch my self with my mouth open and air rushing out . I got the chin straps to keep my mouth closed but that didn't work . It kept slipping off my head. I tried putting a hole in the center and pulling my hair in a ponytail and putting it through the hole to hold it in place. It still slipped. I bought the chin up strips, nasty little things that rip your skin off trying to get off in the morning. Plus I still would breath through my mouth just a smaller opening . The sight of a nasal mask, chin strap and chin up strips must of been a very scary sight for my husband but he didn't complain. Brave Man I decided to get a full face mask to cut down all of that stuff, plus all the marks on my face from the straps and strips. It was the best decision for me.
I now sleep better than before. I still have occasional mask leaks and rain out but my sleep quality is so much better. For all the newbies out there is does get better
