built up condensation

Posted by cpapnerd on April 22, 2005 at 04:56:16:

Hi all,

I've been using CPAP for a few months with moderate success. When I sleep through the night with CPAP, I feel absolutely terrific the next day... I'm productive and happy. The problem is, I seem to be having more nights of poor sleep than those of good sleep. I use a full facial mask that covers my mouth and nose.

I have a machine with a heated humidifier, and the problem is I can't seem to find a good setting. If I set it at the first setting (1 out of 5), it's not enough and I wake up throughout the night because I'm so dry. If I set it at 2, I'll still usually wake up dry but the thing builds up condensation and suddenly the mask becomes noisy. Does anyone else experience this? Is there another mask that I could try that might be less prone to this problem?

The machine is currently adjacent my bed, my resp. therapist says that should be fine, but it obviously isn't working. Tonight I'm going to try putting the machine on the floor (well, slightly above, to help prevent dust buildup) and hope that helps with drainage. I was also thinking about getting a second mask so that I could switch to a dry mask during the night...

I've gotton one good night sleep in about 3 weeks now. A bunch of medicore nights and a few terrible... I'm getting very very frustrated.

thanks
