Sleep Restriction & Sleep Aids

Posted by Phooey on October 03, 2005 at 18:44:06:

My sleep is very fragmented. I wake up (with CPAP) after 2-3 hours and have extreme difficulty getting back to sleep (light dozing, tossing and turning). I have been titrated recently and some of the doctors have suggested sleep restriction. They told me to get out of bed after I initially wake up and go to bed the following night and do the same and so on. They believe that I am waking up due to habit. The theory is that I will eventually become so tired that I will sleep for longer periods and break this habit. However, other doctors have dismissed this is as complete hogwash. What are your thoughts? Anyone tried this?

I am also considering sleep aids such as somnatrol and somnulin. These over the counter supplements premote the production of serotonin in the brain (supposed to make you sleepy) and contain valerian root (supposed to keep you asleep). Has anyone with fragmented sleep tried these or similar products?

My sleep sleep quality is very poor and I need to do something until my MMA/GA in September 2006.

Thanks.
