Welcome!
The chances of sudden death due to untreated sleep apnea are slim to none. It's not like you just stop breathing forever - apnea is a stop/start thing.
Apnea wreaks it's havoc over a period of time by fragmenting your sleep (I got 8 hours, but I feel like it was only 4) and reducing your oxygen level while you are sleeping. This can stress your heart, lungs, depress your immune system, depress your metabolism, and on and on.
You have come to the right place. There are TEN YEARS(!) worth of posts by people just like you - overwhelmed, full of questions and trying to deal with it all. I would recommend spending a few hours and looking through the posts here. There are 128 of these CPAP forums alone. And there are many links on this site to more information.
Generally in life, fear is caused by the unknown. The antidote is getting information. This is the place.
Good luck on your sleep test!
